Established in 2000, the Afi Mountain Wildlife Sanctuary lies in Cross River State, Nigeria, covering about 100 km² of lowland and sub-montane forest. With rocky peaks rising to 1,300 meters, it forms part of one of the largest remaining forest blocks outside Cross River National Park
The sanctuary is home to several critically endangered species, such as Cross River gorilla - the rarerest gorilla subspecies in the world, Nigeria-Cameroon chimpanzee - elusive and endangered, Drill monkey - one of Africa’s most threatened primates., Grey-necked rockfowl (Picathartes) - a unique bird species found in rocky habitats, making it a biodiversity hotspot.
The Sanctuary houses about 600 Drill monkeys and 25 Chimpanzees in different enclaves giving them the opportunity to live in their natural habitat. There are about 1500 - 2500 Drill monkeys in the wild. The Sanctuary is managed through the conservative efforts of the Pandrillus foundation - a non profit trust.
This was an experience worth the journey. A place of peace and a memorable time with nature. It was exciting watching the drill monkets and the Chimpanzees in their natural habitat.
The best time to visit the sanctuary is between November and February (during the dry season). The Sanctuary is nestled in Buanchor village, accessible from Wula town in Cross River state. The Sanctuary bsts of 6 Eco-cabins beautifully surrounded by forest trees with a good sight of the Drill monkeys jumping from tree to tree as if to greet you as you wake up to the beautiful scenery of nature.
The most fascinating experience is the safari to the different enclaves housing the primates. You get to see them display for you wile having a great time in their habitat.

There is no telephone network in the sanctuary. HOwever, there is Starlink that gives you an opportunity to still communicate with the outside world via wWhatsapp or other internet enables communication access.
